Slovenian Government Responds to Translation Problems

The government of Slovenia has responsed to delays in translations into Slovenian and their occasional poor quality due to inexperienced translators and their shortage by proposing a special transition regime concerning the translation of EU documents.

The government's proposal encompasses documents which entered adoption process before 30 April 2004 and cause the biggest problems and suggests a rendering of the Slovenian translation in a condensed form as part of the Slovenian position on a certain matter.

While the translation of acts adopted before 30 April 2004 was the responsibility of Slovenia, European services took over after accession facing a shortage and inexperience of translators for the new official EU languages.

Slovenia called on the European translation services to consistently use terminology provided by Euroterm, a web-based terminology system formed in the pre-accession period. Special courses were prepared to train translators about this system and about the language corpus Eurokorpus.
